I have been doing this longer than anyone else on the New York register, and the benefit circuit is where I am most useful. I know how these evenings are structured and I know that leaving before the auction closes is remembered.
Twelve years means I have sat at a lot of tables where I was the only person nobody had met. It stopped being difficult around year two.
I am direct about what I do and do not take. Large late parties are not for me. A seated dinner with a programme is exactly for me.
