An evening can survive a mismatch. Four days cannot. A dinner where the conversation never quite catches is a slightly flat Tuesday. Four days of the same is a trip you regret paying for.
This is why we arrange a video call before any booking of four days or more. It runs about ten minutes, it costs nothing, and it has changed the match on a meaningful number of trips.
What the call is for
Not vetting. Both parties are already verified by the time a call is arranged. The call exists to answer a question a profile cannot: whether the two of you find each other easy.
Ten minutes is enough. You will know within three whether the conversation has to be pushed uphill, and pushing it uphill for four days is exhausting for both of you.
What to ask
- What the days would look like if nothing were scheduled
- How they feel about early starts, because a trip has several
- Whether they have been to the destination before
- Anything you would rather not spend four days discussing
Saying no afterwards
You can, and it carries no cost or awkwardness. Tell your concierge rather than the companion, give no reason, and we will bring you other options. Companions can decline after the call too, on the same terms.
The trips that go well are almost always the ones where both people had already spoken.
The practical points to settle
Separate accommodation is the standing arrangement on every travel booking. Confirm it on the call so it is not a question later. Also agree the rough shape of the days, whether there is one fixed event, and how much unscheduled time you both want. A trip with nothing planned suits some people and unsettles others.
