Before you start

Have the invitation to hand. The dress code and the timings are usually printed on it, and they are the two things we would otherwise have to ask about.
Say which language the table speaks. It changes who we suggest more than any other detail.
Mention the awkward parts. A colleague you are in a dispute with, a subject to leave alone, a relative who asks too much.
Travel needs longer. Ten working days for anything requiring a visa, and three to four weeks for a multi-city trip.

What we decline
